The festival of Maha Shivaratri is celebrated throughout India as a night of vigil, during which a legend holds that the god Shiva came to earth as a fiery column of light to combat darkness and ignorance.

People also take baths in rivers or ponds and offer milk to their family members and friends before breaking their fast at sunset.
